Maths Resources

The school where I will be teaching for Prac after the holidays uses C2C in some capacity in their classroom teaching. For the maths unit, I have been given the C2C lesson on ‘chance’ and asked to create the lesson, either using the resources in the C2C plan or ones that I think will improve the lesson (with the permission of my mentor of course). I discovered this EduPic Math Drawings website from which I will use the dice to add visuals to my lessons both on the screen in the classroom and on the worksheets the children will receive as reminders of what was discussed in the lesson. The pics on this site are free and are great for early childhood and primary students. Bec

Dolch Word Resources

On meeting my mentor last week, I was asked to create some resources and plan some lessons, ready to start Prac with. The Literacy unit requires me to design a rotational activity using the Dolch Sight Words List 2. After locating the required words I decided to create a bingo style game for my activity. Cleverly I had saved the list. Uncleverly I had forgotten where I had saved it. All was not lost though as when I googled and searched for the list again, I also found this site- Dolch Kit. Already created on this site are games, activities, flashcards and record keeping ideas to allow these words to be taught effectively. On the good side, I don’t have to create the resource as someone else has already done it for me. On the bad side, oh poo, what I thought was a fantastic, original idea on my behalf turned out to be not so genius after all! Bec

Technology in the Classroom

While surfing the net (does anyone use that expression any more?) for more ideas for prac, I came across this site- 101 ideas for using technology in the classroom. This thorough list of ideas, most of which are from the Victorian Education website, covers not only a wide range of subjects, but also other cross curriculum priorities such as Aboriginal and Sustainability resources. Making the most of what you’ve got

On reading Sonia’s blog Using what exists within the classroom it was comforting to know I will not be the only one making the most of the few ICT resources that are in my prac classroom. The Year One classroom I will be in has a projector connected to the teachers computer, easy speaks and listening posts. Bee bots and ipads can be booked in advance but I have been told it is quite a way in advance so may not be available when required. As I have not used easy speaks before I have spent some time looking into the use of this technology. I also intend to research Bee Bots, just in case I get the chance to use them (Fingers crossed)! ESGI

Many teachers I have spoken with over the last few years view assessment as being the easy part of their job- it’s the collating and recording of the information ready for the planning that takes so much time.

The benefits of a program such as ESGI, outlined in this fellow EDC3100 students blog allow teachers to not only view the results of each student and the class as a whole, but also provide indidvidual, specific resources for students to assist them in learning the content or skills they are having trouble with.

This in no way takes away from the individualised planning teachers will do to scaffold the learning of their students, but instead allows teachers to see at a glance where problems lie, whether they are whole class or an individual student and allows for the review and reflection that is critical for teachers to use in future planning.

Sight words

The school I am currently working at uses, and has used ever since I have been there the Magic 100 words for learning sight words. On meeting my mentor I was asked to create resources using the Dolch sight words List 2. Having no idea what these words are, I have researched and found the lists here Hope this helps others to create and organise their prac resources for next term, Bec.

Queensland handwriting

Like many others I have finally met my mentor for prac after the holidays and discussed what this will involve. I have been given homework and activities to have prepared for the first few days with more to follow after I get a feel for the students, timetable and how the teaching and learning occurs within the classroom. One thing I need to create the resources necessary for my first week is the Queensland Handwriting font. After much searching I have finally located it somewhere other than the paid for Learning Place website.
